Depois de otimizar o Windows para suas gravações, vem o dilema: que placa de som usar? É aconselhável usar um mixer? Um controlador?

O primeiro item que vou abordar é o mais importante no mundo “Computer Music”: a placa de som. Esqueça a sua “on board”. Ela vai funcionar bem para gravações simples, mas quando o assunto é usar vários canais e plugins pesadíssimos, ela não vai aguentar. Todas grandes marcas - como M-Audio, Edirol, RME e Motu - têm placas excelentes.

Se você quer usar o Pro Tools, as opções diminuem - só placas da Digidesign e da M-Audio funcionarão. Todas as outras opções, inclusive a M-Audio, funcionam bem no Sonar, Cubase, Logic, Nuendo etc.

Para um computador desktop, o ideal é uma placa PCI, ou seja, uma placa interna. USB e firewire são indicadas para notebooks, mas também podem ser usadas em um computador desktop. Apenas verifique se o seu micro tem uma placa firewire e se suas portas USB são 2.0. A portabilidade das placas firewire e USB é algo bem prático e atraente, que permite levar um notebook para o ensaio e gravar tudo com facilidade. Outra dica é verificar em quais resoluções de áudio as placas trabalham. Placas que gravam até em 192khz é um sinal de conversores de áudio muito bons.

Uma mesa de som externa ajuda bastante, principalmente em placas PCI, que não possuem um controle de volume de entrada e saída na própria interface da mesma. Placas USB e firewire geralmente possuem knobs de ganho como nas imagens abaixo.

Depender só do software da placa não é algo interessante. Gravar uma guitarra ou qualquer instrumento com um sinal muito baixo pode causar muito ruído quando aplicar determinados plugins. Sugiro uma mesa simples, com uma ou duas saídas auxiliares.

Ter um controlador também é algo interessante para gravar ritmos, timbres diversos de variados instrumentos virtuais.

No mercado, você vai encontrar modelos diversos com conexão MIDI (você necessita de uma interface MIDI no computador). Também existem os controladores com conexão USB, que não precisam de interface, nem fonte ou pilha.

Por último é importante você ter bons monitores de referência. Para mixar ou masterizar um trabalho, de nada adianta ter um ótimo equipamento se o produto final ficar ruim por culpa de um monitor não adequado.

Alguns amigos usam seus respectivos aparelhos de som, que é uma alternativa prática e barata. Para um bom resultado, é necessário conhecer muito bem as características do seu aparelho, testar bastante para conseguir uma boa qualidade. Use sempre a equalização flat e faça muitos testes. Um monitor simples de referência não sai tão caro hoje em dia, e vale o investimento! Depois que adquiri o meu consegui resultados excelentes em minhas mixagens e masterizações.
